Retsu Unohana is the longtime captain of the Fourth Division of the Gotei 13, heading up the medical treatment for injured Shinigami.
Though typically appearing as a warm and gentle person, Unohana is feared by many and can quickly put others back in their place. Having been a captain for hundreds of years, she typically heads up the treatment of the injured from battle rather than stepping on to the front lines herself. When Sōsuke Aizen's plot to execute Rukia Kuchiki with the Sōkyoku is foiled, she arrives at Aizen's location and confronts the supposedly dead captain before saving the life of Captain Hitsugaya. Later, she travels to Hueco Mundo to aid Ichigo Kurosaki and brings him back to the Human World so he can fight Aizen while she tends to the wounded.
