18th May 1987: In March 1987 a Mrs Tattersall caused a breach between old friends in the Street when she complained to Weatherfield Recorder editor Ken Barlow that the councillors elected to represent the people were not helping her with the issue of a noisy and busy garage that was causing problems for the residents of her street. Ken wrote an article attacking Alf Roberts and other independent councillors and the argument escalated to the point where Deirdre stood opposite Alf in the elections with Ken supporting her behind the scenes in a campaign that had more than its fair share of dirty tricks. Deirdre gained a pyrrhic victory as she won the election but Alf suffered a major heart attack. When Deirdre, feeling guilty, made enquiries after her old friend’s progress in hospital, his wife Audrey ripped into her, telling her that she was the cause of his plight after hounding him out of office and to take her bleeding heart elsewhere.

Nina Lucas

Nina Lucas is the niece of cafe proprietor Roy Cropper, taken in by her uncle after her sickly father Richard Lucas passed away in 2019. A kind-hearted but complex young woman, Nina is rarely seen without her Goth attire and make-up, which she considers a part of her identity. In 2021, she and her boyfriend Seb Franklin were brutally attacked by Corey Brent and his gang, an attack which cost Seb his life. As the pair had been targeted due to Nina's appearance, Nina had a crisis of self, ditching the Goth clobber for a while. She overcame this in time to testify against Corey on a murder charge, but it wasn't enough to convict and Kelly Neelan was sent down for the crime instead. The conviction was quashed several weeks later when new evidence was found proving that Corey was the attacker.
Previous featured characters: Josie Clarke, Evelyn Plummer; Jacob Hay; Zoe Tattersall; Ivy Brennan; Oliver Battersby.

...that the first episode of the programme ever transmitted that did not feature any of the original cast members from 1960 was Episode 1428 (23rd September 1974)?
...that Stanley Wood, who wrote Episode 1237 (22nd November 1972), was the father of comedian Victoria Wood?
...that in Episode 1183 (17th May 1972), the character of Rita Bates gave her maiden name as "Foster" and not the later-established "Littlewood"?
...that although the character of Armistead Caldwell had died in 1935, his voice was heard in Episode 1256 (29th January 1973)?
...that the first ever repeat of an episode of Coronation Street was on Friday 10th February 1961 when strike action prevented the transmission of that night's edition and Episode 1 was shown in its place?
