The WeeklyWeek 357: Esoteric Emotions

Prompt period: 12 April 2025 - 20 April 2025
Judge: GazpachoSoupreme

I hope you've all raring to write some melancholy, because that's what I'm going to ask of you this week. In particular, I've grown a fondness for The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows - a compendium of neologisms that capture odd, hyper-specific feelings, and one that I think is really ripe for some character-driven storytelling.

For this first stab, I'm offering few that all share a common theme, ones that are tied to moments of the past and how they shape your character's present (or future), using any format you like - diary entries, correspondence, bare dialogue, or regular prose. You can write about-

  • -the forgotten Damocles Sword of a Fellchaser-
  • -the retroactively softened hardship of a Harke-
  • -or the sliding doors you only later realise were a Keyframe.

If you think those brief summaries from me don't really convey the full definitions of those feelings - well, let's see if you can do them justice in 1500 words (give or take) of story.

Random Good Article: Vadam Legacies: Breaking the Covenant

Autel entered the Sanctum of the Hierarchs. He walked past the Sangheili Honour Guards whom were positioned on either side of him, ready to act if the Prophets were threatened. He stared straight ahead of him, and finally stopped in front of the Prophets of Truth and Mercy. Part of him was relieved that Regret wasn't present, which would resolve the complications he had foreseen with this appointment, but another part of him wondered where he was.

Autel kneeled in front of the Hierarchs. Almost immediately, Truth said, "Rise, young warrior." He complied, and the Prophet said, "Guards, leave us."

As the Sangheili filed out of the sanctum, there was a long silence. Autel felt a moment of apprehension. Were these Hierarchs part of the plot to overthrow the Sangheili? If so, then he had no doubt he would never leave here alive. Finally, Mercy floated forward, and said, "These reports you give us are most disturbing. One of the High Prophets had tried to cause turmoil within our Covenant."

"We had never suspected the Prophet of Regret — one of my closest colleagues for ages — would do such a thing," Truth said. "I realize how distressing these last few units have been for you. However, upon the word of the Hierarchs, I assure you that is all over, and I must ask you to keep your silence upon this matter. You shall soon see why."

Fanon of the Month — April 2025: Halo: Silent Shadow

Halo: Silent Shadow is a First-Person Shooter spinoff of the Halo franchise developed by 343 Industries, with consultation from id Software. Taking place concurrently with the events of Halo 2, Silent Shadow follows a Silent Shadow lance known as the Cleansing Paladins. Over the course of the campaign, the player's character, the Invincible Paladin, participates on several warfronts against various factions, including the UNSC, Heretics, Sentinels, Covenant loyalists, and eventually the Flood. While initially staunch followers of the Covenant, the plot covers the Cleansing Paladins' collective response to the Great Schism and the resulting fallout. The title released on Xbox Series X/S, Windows 11, and Steam on October 15, 2022 with crossplay support for the Incursion multiplayer mode.

Mythic Article of the Year: Mobile warfare by Ahalosniper
HW2C-Mantis

Mobile warfare, also known as "walker warfare" or—informally— "mech warfare", is the use of walking vehicles in modern warfare. While long considered a marginal and esoteric doctrine, the practice of employing walking vehicles (or "mechs") in armed conflict has seen a resurgence since the beginning of the 26th century and proliferation in the balkanized galaxy following the Human-Covenant War. While fundamentally similar to armoured warfare in its use of armored vehicles, the enhanced mobility of walkers and their stability on the varied and often difficult terrain of extrasolar worlds has resulted in altogether new approaches to warfighting. These changes have since necessitated military academics to consider mobile warfare its own discipline.

Winner of the 2024 Best Vehicle, Best Event award(s).

G'day! I'm TheAussie1417, and I'm a very big fan of Halo, and its lore. I've always felt that many areas of Halo don't have as much depth to them as they could, unlike Warhammer or Star Wars, and so I've committed myself to either developing new avenues for canonical expansion, or just writing about ideas that pop into my head.

Survival of the Fittest

Two new Survival of the Fittest (SOTF) events have arrived! See if your favorite characters are up to the test of beating all the rest!

"So, it’s time to test your mettle, folks! Spill some blood, make some gore, kill those splitjaws, gas monkeys, nishums, chickens, jir’a’ul, or whatever on the enemy team, and maybe you’ll survive long enough for the big surprise. Good luck to all, and without further ado, let the bloodbath begin!"
