― David Attenborough, Prehistoric Planet Season 1 Trailer
This is the unofficial wiki for Prehistoric Planet, the Apple TV+ streaming series produced by the BBC Natural History Unit in the early 2020s.
Episodes
Prehistoric Planet
Developed over the course of "a decade" prior to its release,[1] the first two seasons of Prehistoric Planet focus on dinosaurs and other prehistoric life during the Maastrichtian stage of the Mesozoic Era's Late Cretaceous Period, approximately 72 – 66 million years ago.[DN 1] Jon Favreau and Mike Gunton served as the executive producers, with narration provided by Sir David Attenborough.
Scientific consultation was led by Darren Naish, and also involved other experts including Alexander Farnsworth, John R. Hutchinson, Kiersten Formoso, Liz Martin-Silverstone, Luke Muscutt, Mark Witton, Michael Habib, Paul Valdes, Peter Skelton, Robert Spicer, Scott Hartman, and Steve Brusatte.
The computer-generated visual effects were created by the Moving Picture Company, which had previously collaborated with Favreau on The Jungle Book (2016) and The Lion King (2019). Jellyfish Pictures contributed concept development and storyboarding. Creature development and design also involved David Krentz, director of Dinosaur Revolution and character designer for Disney's Dinosaur (2000). The score is composed by Kara Talve, Anže Rozman and Hans Zimmer for Bleeding Fingers Music.
Season 1 (May 23 - 27, 2022)
Season 2 (May 22 - 26, 2023)
Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age (November 26 - 30, 2025)
In 2025, the Technicolor Group, along with its subsidiaries (including the Moving Picture Company), faced shutdown,[2] while Jellyfish Pictures suspended operations.[3] These, combined with the fact that production on Prehistoric Planet reportedly took nearly a decade,[1] meant that the creation of a new season appeared to be hampered and unlikely for the time being.
However, on July 29, 2025, it was officially announced that five new episodes of Prehistoric Planet, this time set during the Ice Age, would premiere on November 26, 2025. Unlike previous seasons, narration will be provided by Tom Hiddleston, while the photorealistic visual effects are now being produced by Framestore, known for its work on the Walking with... series and Prehistoric Park. Kara Talve, Anže Rozman, and Hans Zimmer return as composers.[4]

Earth
Maastrichtian Stage, Late Cretaceous Period (72 - 66 million years ago)
Prior to the Cretaceous-Paleogene Extinction event, the continents were roughly in the same positions they are in today, though the Earth is not yet entirely in its current state. The Western Interior Seaway was disappearing, there was heavy volcanism in India's Deccan Traps due to tectonic activity, and rising sea levels were even covering some areas like Madagascar, but dinosaurs, pterosaurs, plesiosaurs, and mosasaurs were still as dominant as ever, thriving and diversifying until the end of their reign.
The map below depicts Earth as it may have appeared approximately 66 million years ago. While this map may not be entirely accurate (as many interpretations of Maastrichtian paleogeography have been made), it is sufficient for the purpose of showing the locations of the various settings and biomes featured in the stories of this series.
This map is provided by the Visible Paleo-Earth (VPE) Project, and can only be used for non-commercial, educational, and research purposes, provided that proper credits are given to those who made this map's existence possible: The Planetary Habitability Laboratory @ UPR Arecibo, NASA, Ron Blakey and Colorado Plateau Geosystems, Inc., and The PaleoMap Project.
Supplementary Information
Welcome, user!
Now, a few things to keep in mind before you begin making your way through this wiki.
- Only logged in users can contribute to this wiki.
- No user under the age of 13 is allowed, in compliance with COPPA Law and fandom's terms of use.
- This is not a wiki for fanmade content, illogical, false, and/or outdated information. Neither is it a place for competition. If you're here, it should be either to browse, or to contribute meaningfully at your own pace. Quality, accuracy, and efficiency (without sacrificing relevant and extensive knowledge) is the priority here. The wonders of nature (as was portrayed within the series itself) include combat, aggression, and other problems, but that does not mean the same should be started, much less proliferated, within what is supposed to be a place of proper, civil, and trustworthy discussion of facts and knowledge.
- Keep in mind the rules and regulations of this wiki. Though this place is small, it has very high standards to uphold on behalf of the show and paleontological information (which needs and deserves respect most of all) as a whole.
Other than that, feel free to explore and contribute. Have a nice day!
